Surviving the Witching Hour

Hungry, tired...

As parents, many of us make a special effort to do the afternoon school run. Whether you're a school run regular or not, you'll know the drill...overtired, hungry kiddos tromping about the place being grumpy and loud as mum or dad attempt to prep dinner to fill their bellies. 4:30-5:30 can be a hellish hour if we're honest, so let's help each other out with a few tips on the what we do to make it through...

  • Simply Cook: We love these little monthly kits which contain simple recipes for meals which can be made in 20 minutes or less. All the ingredients are fresh and the recipes save us from the 'same old'. Many of the recipes are simple enough for the kiddies to pitch in...for a start, those aged 4 and up are great at peeling (carrots) and smashing (avocados).
  • Cosmic Kids Yoga: These free yoga videos are heaven-sent on a wintry, cold or rainy afternoon. All the videos are themed and it's easy to sort the videos by length so that you know just how much time you'll have to get dinner on the table. We're not a big fan of techy distractions for the kids, but these videos are worthwhile.
  • Usbourne Step-by-Step Drawing Books: Have the kiddies write to gran...using pictures rather than words if they're itty.
If they've been a bit overstimulated during the school day, we find that our smalls will settle into a long play with Lego or the doll house. Somehow solo make-believe sessions seem to reset the mind. All else fails? We took a meditation course last Autumn and found the method so useful that we signed our eldest up for a simplified children's course. Five minutes of kiddie meditation goes a long way toward calming the house during the dinner rush.

What tips and tricks get your crew through the crazy hour? Let us know k[at]bumblebox.co.uk.

Bumble Box kits are designed to bring families together. We catch animals' footprints in the sand, give the trees a shake to see what's living in there, host a Family Olympics, plant a fairy garden, race homemade boats in the stream...you get the drift. Together, we'll make it through your family-time bucket list.
