Bumble Box kits are designed to bring happiness home. So, upon adopting this as our mission, I decided I needed to do some searching to figure out what makes people happy. After all, I know what works for me...but I can't think my formula for happiness is the same as everyone else's.

I've explored meditation, philosophy texts, literature on relationships, you name it, I've read it. After all this reading and research, I can save you a lot of time and reading! In my opinion, all the critical points are made within a single text...and it was a page turner for me. The book's entitled:

The entire book is worth a thoughtful read if you have a few hours, but for those who are time poor (parents, ahem...), I’ll summarise a few key points here.

There are seven key factors which affect happiness (listed here roughly in order of importance):

  • family relationships
  • financial situation
  • work
  • community & friends
  • health
  • freedom (government situation)
  • personal values

Aside from health, freedom & income, all of these factors are most concerned with the quality of our relationships (at home, work, socially and with family wherever they may be).

The odd thing is that as a sleep deprived parent of young children with school fees, mortgages and childcare costs in the mix, relationships of all types suffer. No wonder parenthood can be a tricky (though lovely) lifestage.

My work at Bumble Box is about bringing families together—helping family members to spend time fully engaged with one another doing something worthwhile is a way to build loving, supportive family relationships (#1 on the happiness list). But there are lots of ways to bring more happy into your life… just have a read of Lord Layard’s book to learn more.

Bumble Box's monthly activity kits are designed to bring families together. We catch animals' footprints in the sand, give the trees a shake to see what's living in there, host a Family Olympics, plant a fairy garden, race homemade boats in the stream...you get the drift.

Together, we'll make it through your family-time bucket list while the kiddies are small.
