Clearing the Mind

Meditation and all that jazz...

Is your mind feeling busy? With all the turmoil and uncertainty these days, I find that it's difficult not to let the mind wander sometimes. And as much as we try, it can be difficult to bridle the mind and stay focused. 

Research says that being fully present for the ones we love at least part of the time we're together is critical for healthy relationships and our own personal relationships...but it's hard not to have a busy mind when so many big decisions seem up for grabs in the world we live in today.

In the midst of all the chaos last Autumn, we took a meditation class. After much reading and research, we opted for Vedic meditation (an unbranded twin to Transcendental meditation, TM) and have found our daily practice (20 mins in the am and another 20 mins in the pm) incredibly helpful in weathering the ups and downs of the world news report. 

Basically, Vedic meditation uses a mantra (a few sounds that you say over and over to yourself in a sweet, but silent voice in your mind). Sitting upright on a comfortable seat wherever you happen to be and without the need for tapes, scripts or complete silence, Vedic meditation is entirely portable. Being portable has really helped me to keep up my daily practice--and, ultimately, being committed to the practice is what makes meditation effective as without consistency, meditators don't realise the full benefits. 

So, I meditate on the train and bus...at home...on a park bench (when I'm in town and it's a nice day)...in a church (when it's raining and I'm in a pinch). Immediately after meditating, I feel much more rested and positive. Suddenly, my brain seems to functioning more effectively and I'm more able to keep my cool when things don't go my way. 

Going into the class, I was a sceptic--by expectations were low--so, for me, the impact has been profound.
