Celebrate Mother's Day!

Tips for Outdoorsy Family Days Near London

Mothering Sunday is fast approaching--what will you do this year?

Rather than having a solo spa day or a fancy family meal, we like to get outside and enjoy our family on Mothering Sunday (fingers crossed for sunshine!). So, if you're like us and would like some worthwhile family time to celebrate 'your day', here a few hints to send along to your significant other...all are within easy striking distance of London...

Hike Hampstead Heath

Lovely woodland and heath for a dose of the countryside without leaving the City. Though we often take a picnic to enjoy at a scenic spot, we love dropping by The Garden Gate for a pub lunch amongst the locals when time and queues allow.

Cycle from Richmond to Hampton Court

Hire cycles at Richmond station and head out of 'town' to cycle along the Thames. With plenty of pubs and restaurants along the way, you'll be spoilt for choice of refreshments. A favourite of ours is taking along a picnic to enjoy by the Palace and stopping by cycle-friendly Petersham Nurseries for a cup of tea along the final stretch back to the station.

Cycle along the canal from Broxbourne (Northeast London)

Hire cycles here and head on your way. The route's nicely signposted and there's a lovely pub just by the cycle hire shed. Do bring a picnic for refreshments mid-route as the pub offerings along the way are sparse. Stop off at the Olympic whitewater rafting centre for a look at the action and a cup of tea before heading back up stream to drop off the bikes.

A riverside hike from Bourne End to Henley

This lovely walk along the Thamespath makes its way through a lovely riverside landscape. Nearly Bray and Marlow are the perfect spots for a riverside break or refreshments.

Whatever you do, don't forget the bubbly and a bouquet and card for mum...
