Ways to add a dash of excitement to your days with the kids

It's Friday morning. You have the day off to enjoy some time with your under 4's, but don't have so much time during the work week to plan...and, maybe, the school run for an older child keeps you close to home. What to do?

Of course, we started boxing up family activity kits back in 2015 for times like these...but, not everyone needs a kit. Here are few activities to mix things up using supplies most of us already have somewhere about the house:

Coin walk: Grab a coin from your stash. Heads, turn right. Tails, turn left. Head out of the front door for a walk and flip a coin at every junction to decide which way to go. Outdoor activity. Best with clear skies.

Snail race: Take a clean, dry yogurt pot and a bit of chalk along for your next walk--gather any snails you see and place them into the pot. Once you have a few snails, use the chalk to draw a target onto a bit of pavement. Place all the snails onto the centre circle and see which snail makes it to the centre most rapidly. A wildflower feast for the winner! (Dandelion greens and lettuce are particular favourites). Outdoor activity. A great one for when it's recently rained.

Window lose or draw. Grab a dry-erase marker or chalk pen from your craft stash. Cut 10-20 ~4cm squares from plain paper. Draw an object that your child could copy (star, snail, circle, cat, tree, house, flower, fish, sailboat, etc) onto each square. Fold the bits of paper and place them within a clean paper bag or tote. Take turns drawing inspiration from the tote and drawing the object shown on the bit of paper onto the window using the dry-erase marker or chalk pen while the other player guesses what the final drawing will be. Indoor.

Balloon tennis. Surely, you'll have thought of this one. For an added challenge, swat at the balloons with fly swats from Poundland. Indoor.

Planting bulbs. So, you probably won't have daffodil or tulip bulbs floating about the place, but a trip to the garden centre could make this one a go. It's the perfect time of year to pop a few bulbs into the ground. Outdoor.

Shadow puppets. Grab a few sheets of card and print a few favourite colouring sheets onto them. Trim out the objects, tape each one to a straw or skewer, find a torch and wait until sunset. Easy. Indoor.

Bumble Box kits are designed to bring families together. We catch animals' footprints in the sand, give the trees a shake to see what's living in there, host a Family Olympics, plant a fairy garden, race homemade boats in the stream...you get the drift. Together, we'll make it through your family-time bucket list. Fancy learning more about our kits? Visit us at Bumblebox.co.uk.
